it depends on the load being exerted on the transmission. if you're accelerating /decelerating, the torque of the engine/drag of the car, respectively, are holding the transmission in gear. it has to be in a neutral state to slide it in & out of gear.
my personal belief is that unless people understand the mechanics of this type of shifting, they don't really need to be doing it. their driveline will thank them. transmissions in passenger cars use helical-cut gears for smoothness & quietness. the trade-off is that they don't mesh together as easily & are a little weaker than straight-cut gears.
