They did that surgery, and something went wrong. He went on leave and flew home and he started bleeding form his ears, nose and eyes mid flight. I forget what he said happened but, the end result is that he can't depressurize/equalize??? He cant fly any more because the change of altitude/air pressure...he says that the pain and pressure was unreal! true story the guy was a submariner, had to get out the service because the pressures change while submerged.
