you can lure him down the stairs into the open area just at the top of the ladder (before the armored boar) and fight him there. if he's above you on the stairs, his lunge may just go over your head. Also, when you fight the boar, smack him in the face a few times. I killed it with one backstab and wanted his helmet. I think the drop rate is higher if you beat his face.
