How do you figure? There's thousands of single-turbo Supras on the streets, and hundreds with larger turbos. Not the most practical but not uncommon.

It's a performance muffler, just at the end of the exhaust instead of the middle like the US cars do.
In other words, arguing that the can is pointless is no different than telling a streeted hotrod that his mufflers are pointless. They perform a function of muffling some of the exhaust without restricting the air like a stocker does.
