Why buy Volt when you can have a nice Cruze for half price?

Content wise, a Volt is similar to a Cruze LTZ. Thats what, $25k? The battery that costs about $15k last I checked. Thats 40 already. Then there's a few grand for the Voltec drivetrain. And of course, little things like highly efficient speakers are found throughout the car to improve its overall efficiency, adding a even more to the cost.
And that says nothing about the ridiculously high R&D cost of the Volt. I have no clue how much they spent, but fast tracking such a unique vehicle does not come cheap. I'm thinking 2 or 3 times what a normal car would cost.
So looking at what you are getting, it isn't priced all that high. Yes, it is expensive compared to a compact car sold by an entry level brand. But then again ... just about everything else on the road is expensive compared to such cars too. Yet nobody really cares when someone spends $40,000 on a Silverado, but when its a Volt all of a sudden thats too much?
