I was thinking the same thing. NO abused child of seven talks like that. Which is fine if the author doesn't put quotations as if it were a direct quote.
Plus, the confusion of the parents (or guardians) whereabouts and presence with the police for the reported timeline.
I'd like to be alone in a magic room with that dude (Mr. Sleboda) and a bat in my hand though.
