It's true about turbos. The 2.0T in my GTI put out max torque starting at 1800rpm. A whole 217lb/ft, if IIRC. Only had 200hp.
The problem is that there's no replacement for displacement. A turbo 4 still sounds awful, no matter how you tune it. Nothing will replace the thunder of a V8. And having a 2.0L motor versus a 6.2L motor means you feel every accessory (like the A/C compressor) kick on and off because the engine has so much less mass.
So, while I support better fuel economy...I absolutely loathe 4-cylinders, no matter what you do to them.
I do enjoy the supercharged 6 in the new Audi S4. On a dyno, it's got close to 400hp and the car is an absolute rocket with AWD. But it's weird to have all that power and the noise it's making is indicative of a small-displacement V6
