Something to note, You'd be surprised how many people miss from inside 20ft to the target. I'd most certainly take a class.
the targets from the bootcamp qualifier you'd swear they were shooting from at least 50 yrds lol.

For home/personal defense, i'd suggest larger caliber like a .40 or .45 (or even shotgun like someone said)

in california to get a CCW permit you pretty much have to have court paperwork of restraining orders or something to PROVE that someone would want you dead, and having a higher caliber gun on the permit application improves your odds because of their 'stopping power' (who uses a silenced baretta 9mm for self defense? lol)
