I think there are refinement issues with them. VW and Ford are both using them in some of their lower priced cars, and both have been flamed for being jerky in reviews.

they always put reverse on the wrong side..... great for backing up when you want to go forward
I've actually always preferred reverse on the left. The first example looks like a great way to hit reverse when aiming for 6th, particularly when going from 7th to 6th.
