Why did they do it? For the same reason SRT does anything ... because they can.

The technology in modern cars is incredible.
Thing is ... the Viper did it without much of anything in terms of technology. The most advanced thing on it is anti-lock brakes. No magnetically controlled shocks. No automated manual transmission. No stability control. No torque vectoring active differential. No exotic carbon fibre body.

Huge engine. Naturally aspirated. Steel body. Rear wheel drive. Manual transmission.

As for a production car not beating it in the near future ... the next gen Viper is expected next year ...
