Let me tell you my Montana Experience. It turns out there was no official speed limit (that has been repealed and there are limits now everywhere in Montana). However the rule for the road was actually that you were required to maintain a 'prudent' speed for conditions. The net effect was that the speed limit was whatever the cop on patrol in that area thought it should be. 85 apparently wasn't prudent on a long straight stretch- he just made it a warning though.

To the OP. I understand 100% what you are trying to say and do. I've read all your counters. It won't work in America today without a system overhaul- and good luck getting those arguments out with the current eco-arguments. It would be easier politically to reduce the average speed then to raise it right now.

It's not speed that kills in general, it's differences in speed-if everyone drove 100 mph with appropriate distance between each car, then 100 wouldn't be an issue. Until you can effectively enforce travel lanes and minimum speed and distance- don't even bother.

You'd be better off trying to create toll roads with 100 mph speed limits and private enforcement.
