If someone wants to steal your Camaro and is not going to hurt you let them have it. It is not worth what will happen to your life if you shoot someone over a possession. You may be completely justified in shooting the person, but you will still have to hire an attorney for the Grand Jury presentation. Every shooting goes before one. Second, if you don't kill the person I can almost completely gaurantee you that you will be sued by them in civil court for damages. If you do kill them, someone in their family will sue you for damages. If you live where Castle Doctrine applies, you most likely will win the lawsuit, but only after ten's of thousands of dollars in legal bills. NOT WORTH IT. Finally, after you shoot someone you will need to get therapy. Police departments require it for a reason. I have already decided possessions are not worth a life, that is why I have insurance.
HOWEVER, if someone threatens my life or the life of my family I will fight back. That is not something that you can get back. If my kids are in the back of the Camaro there is no way they are being driven off with a car jacker. That is my line in the sand.
A gun is a strong tool in self defense, but it is the last line of defense and should only be used when you are in immediate danger. I would suggest to everyone that carries a gun to find a local IDPA club and start shooting with them. Learning how to use your gun in a defensive way is paramount to your safety and most importantly the safety of those around you. Adrenaline clouds your judgement, so shooting with IDPA helps you feel how it affects you.
Sorry for my soap box, but deciding to carry a gun moves you to a new standard in my book. That of a Sheep Hearder, and not a sheep. You have to train, learn and decide in advance when you are willing to take a life if necessary.
