Just because the earth might have been smaller doesn't mean that it had less mass...and if it had the same amount of mass then the gravity would have been greater. Even if it has less mass it also had a smaller radius, so depending on the ratio it may have had the exact same gravity. I'm sure someone out there much more mathematically enthusiastic than me could figure out what the gravity changes would have to be to explain any distance change in the orbit of the moon.
