Look at the statistics, the Sonoma ALMS accident was start of his decline. Mind you it wasn't fast, but it sure took him out of championship contention in cup the year it happened. The following years saw less and less wins, winding down to not making Chases then eventually leaving DEI. The same thing happened to a lot of notable drivers after they got hurt like Terry Labonte and Bill Elliot. Even Dale Earhhardt was the same after breaking his sternum at Talladega.
