I actually did it. I'll tell ya' how it went, you be the judge whether it was a success or failure.

It was the first year of my independence (precocious I was) I was 16, I lived rough for that first year, moving several times a month. The guy I shared troubles, his name was Steve, with (not even a roommate) was 17. We wagered each other that whoever succeeded with a new girl would pay for the next day's beer and cigarets for the two of us.

The wager's rule was simple. You could say only one sentence: "Do you wanna' ****?" Since we were at the Saturday Afternoon Free Concert at Berkeley's Provo Park, and it was 1972, there were plenty of chicks. I saw Steve fail a couple of times; I, myself, was slapped in the face, once. The second girl, by the name of Coco, was a foxy older woman, 19 or 20 years old! She took me to her car (I made sure my friend saw her), and off we went to her crib in San Lorenzo. It was very cool. During a recovery moment, I heard a motorcycle in her driveway. I asked her, "Who?" She replied it was her live-in boyfriend who was an Angel.

Ooh, time to get my skinny ass outa' bed and down the road. I pulled on my pants, and socks and held my boots as I jumped out the bedroom window. The boyfriend's dog started after me, I lost him as I crossed the backyard fence, but he kept one of my boots, and off I went down a street I'd never seen, in a town I didn't know.

There remained a saving grace though. The driver of the first ride I hitched liked my dilemma so much, I could tell by his uproaring laughter, he gave me a ride all the way back to Provo Park.
