In my experience, rates do vary greatly by provider. But the more expensive the bike the more your insurance will be. if you buy yourself a used bike for 3k, you can probably cut that rate in half. If you remove collision insurance (only liability+comprehensive) Your rates should be closer to $200-400/yr.

But as others have stated, take a motorcycle safety course. I believe most insurance companies give a discount if you take one of those courses.
