only having 315 hp don't have anything to do with the number of gears. even the 99 miatas had 6-spds behind the 142hp 1.8L

In the quarter mile you are never up into 5th and 6th anyway and on the road track it is pretty much the same. Maybe at the salt flats the extra gear would help. usually 5 spds have a final gear around .7:1 -ish. 6 spds tend to have around .5:1 -ish. it also depends on the rear end you're using as well. 5th gear with a 3.27:1 rear is going to be more economical than 6th with a 4.56:1 (assuming the rest of the car [namely tire height] is the same)
