only having 315 hp don't have anything to do with the number of gears. even the 99 miatas had 6-spds behind the 142hp 1.8L

usually 5 spds have a final gear around .7:1 -ish. 6 spds tend to have around .5:1 -ish. it also depends on the rear end you're using as well. 5th gear with a 3.27:1 rear is going to be more economical than 6th with a 4.56:1 (assuming the rest of the car [namely tire height] is the same)
