It's not the hard drive connection. It's the fact that the heatsinks weren't staying connected to the motherboard and thus not making a proper connection to the cpu anymore hence the overheating. Which was easy to see after I opened mine and "fixed" the firmware on my DVD drive. Some boxes have screws holding the heatsink down and some just had clips attaching them.
