One thing occurred to me.

I remember a story of someone in Texas last week who is going to prison because he shot someone who was invading an outbuilding of his. Apparently the criminal who got shot had gone ahead of time to "prepare" the building for quick entry.

Anyways, you said this guy turned off the lights both times. This could have been in preperation for him coming back later with friends to steal beer (or the Camaro)...
