I stopped reading responses when I got to #2 of pit bashing. Makes me insane.
All dogs have instinct to fight and protect what is theirs. Being a pit does not automatically make them more agressive or mean or whatever; asshole owners who want a mean dog are the reason for pits having such a bad rep.
Dogs in the same household are going to eventually fight for alpha. I'm willing to bet that's what these two were doing. It sucks, but sometimes its best to just let it happen. Its natural. But if you need to break it up, I agree with the hose idea. That way no one gets hurt too badly.
I hope your GF doesn't fear the dogs after this to where you need to find one or both of them new homes... guess I should read the rest of the posts to see if this has already become an issue....
