At night, I agree, during the day, you weren't paying attention or following too close. I watched one car after another drive over an obstacle in the road just a couple of days ago, makes you wonder where their mind is.
Give it a try... throw a dead raccoon (cat, dog, pig, whatever's handy) in the road where people can see it from half a mile away... just about every one of them will run right over it, even if they can go around it.
American drivers are (mostly)under trained, over confident and inattentive.
