Not sure about the Navy, but in the Army you say "Former" not "Ex". Ex means you were removed involuntarily (Captains Mass, etc).

Also, most posts, stations, etc have an outprocessing flow that has optional career building courses for when you are completely out. I'd take advantage of that. It helped with a lot of DOs and DON'Ts that weren't so common sense in the civilian world. Civilians are a much gentler bunch (at least to Army). : /
