Unless you have smelled a dead human body...and done so as part of your job on a daily basis, could you testify to this. You need to have experience as in an "expert" to testify that the smell you smelled was consistant of that of decomposing human remains based on 23 years of law enforcement experience with "X" police department.
A "civilian" can't say...oh I smelled human remains...and testify expertly. Hell, you can put a pig in a car for 2 weeks and tell an unknowing person it's human remains and they very well will believe you. The smells are eerily similar. Not exact, but similar. When I travel down roads and smell roadkill on a hot 90 degree day, sometimes I am fooled...it's deja vu'
The smell of decomposition is inconclusive and circumstantial without DNA, blood, trace evicence from the car.
