But for the rest of us who cling to the old school notions, our forefathers did a pretty good job drivin' them Brits from our shores after we beat them outa' their redcoats at the Battle of Yorktown in 1781. Where ol' General Burgoyne hadta' have his little band play "The World turned upside down" to express his disbelief that a motley band of "colonials"(he looked down on us, you see) could whip the grandest military force in the world of that time to a standstill and send 'em packin'. A wee bit of help from the French not withstanding, we did do down those suckas to our eternal renown.
