When someone I don't know addresses me with anything other than sir, excuse me sir, hello or uses my proper first name or surname..I ignore them.
It's real funny to see how they react...and when they mention it after they have my attention I simply say...I didn't acknowledge you because I thought "Chief" was someone else.
You get satisfaction without being a dick not acknowledging being addressed buddy, boss, Chief, or stuff like that.
