Some low life's will take the things you described and attempt to get a loan with the vehicle as collateral. It's in your friend's name and essentially looks like your 'friend' took out another loan which will never be paid.

I hope your friend reported this and gives a heads up to the insurance company in case a second lien holder's name shows up.
