We're trying, and his teachers and school are big advocates for him.
But... when they detain you (again, people who may have lived here, work, have families, go to church and school, just regular folks pulled over on a traffic offense) they send you to ICE for processing. When you are sent to the immigration facility in Atlanta (once 400 beds, now 4000), you are stripped and put in prison clothes with no underwear. You are given ham sandwiches and visitation is extremely limited. Even if you find a charity to help you legally in immigration court, the wait is 7 months or more (all in an overcrowded detention with no underwear). Then you're sent to an even larger facility in South Georgia (8+ hours from your family) while you await your final deportation.
A local advocacy group seriously has a "Panties Drive" to send to women in detention. The government won't issue them.
