That's not a "smoke trail". Its just vapor, like airplanes. Its more prominent with a shuttle launch because the fuel coming out of the Space Shuttle Main Engines (SSMEs) is hydrogen and oxygen, basically making water which causes the dense vapor trail. But still a cool pic
