Anyhoo, since my post may not have been terribly helpful the other day, and for anyone else who may have similar issues in the future:
Go
here (User CP -> Edit Avatar, left side under
Settings & Options) and you'll have 3 choices. There are the generic ones displayed at the top. Below that are the 2 choices for custom avatars. First is to link to an image on some other website and below that is for uploading from your PC.
I am not sure if the forum automatically shrinks a linked picture or not. But for uploaded images, it needs to be 120 by 120 pixels or 175.8 KB (whichever is smaller).
