Like I asked before, if they took off bluray playback would you feel the same way? Updating the firmware is necessary to use ANY of the other features of the ps3 over time, other than maybe the browser. Bluray playback, newer games, many require the firmware update. We'll see what the outcome of the merged class-action suit is. For the few people that know how to use linux, it was a big part of the ps3 and it was touted even pre-release as an impressive and innovative feature and was a major reason the system had a $600 price tag at release. If you remember, the US military bought 2,000 PS3's to run other os on as a supercomputer, a nice fact that Sony threw around to sell the ps3.

This Entire post is an out-right LIE!! Since you are presenting yourself as the type of person that is makeing stuff up, thus a constructive conversation is not possible. I will only correct 3 points, it would take 3 pages to correct that nonsense you typed on your computer. and Yes I do know What OS was being used for (cheap supercomputing and servers etc..)

Lie #1. OS was not the reason the PS3 was so expensive at all!!! The PS3 initialy cost Sony $860 to make largely thanks to the Bluray drive. Bluray Players back then cost $1,000, new technology and limited bluray diodes drove up the price. The Main reason OS was implimented for the ps3 was an attempt by Sony to make the PS3 MORE AFFORDABLE for Sony through european and other territories tax breaks... (please note that what you posted was an outright, complete and total LIE.)

Lie #2 You don't need a Firmware Update to play back any Bluray films. Bluray specs (PIP, BD Java) has been finalized since 2007.

2. False bluray analogy is not even comparing apples to oranges, but apples to watermelons. Likewise Sony can't Disable the HDD, the Bluray Drive, the CPU, the GPU, The 512MB of Ram etc..and still perform the way it is designed.

Sony didnot advertise the military buying PS3s inorder to sell ps3's, there were news sites that reported the transaction yes. and Guess what those like the military and colleges are still using the PS3 as a cheap super computer and servers since they did not update to the latest firmware. Also in 2009, PS3's with OS were no longer in production when the PS3 slim came to the scene.

3. You continue to avoid the Fact that the SONY (and Microsoft) have been altering features to their console for the Past 4/5 years through firmware updates, I have lost count how many features have been added since launch. Heck the PS3 is now a 3D compatible bluray player in compliance with HDMI 1.4 specs as of late last year. And No one stripe anything from you, You voluntarly gave up OS system when you voluntarly updated to the next firmware. You own the Box but you don't own PSN or Future software until purchase. ALL COMPANYS ARE THAT WAY. and I'm Done... latter..
