Shoulda kept Pontiac and merged Buick's lineup into Cadillac and Chevy.
But what's my opinion worth.

See above.
The G8 was a great car sold under a craptastic marketing effort and introduced at the worst possible time. The G6 was an unprofitable fleet queen. The G5 and G3 were jokes. The Torrent was pathetic, and the Vibe was a rebadged Toyota.
Meanwhile, you have Buick selling like hotcakes in China with sales for new launch products quickly picking up here in the states. In fact, Buick was the fastest growing automotive brand in the US for 2010, and they've already outsold Lexus once or twice this year. Plus, Buick's average transaction prices are higher than anything Pontiac could've ever dreamed of.
The choice was simple. Keep the brand that sells hundreds of thousands of unprofitable fleet cars and rebadges, or keep the brand that actually generates profit and gives GM a major platform for expansion overseas. Pontiac was dead the minute the phrase "new GM" was first uttered.
