Actually, it's still their hardware and their software, which means they can do whatever they want with it. It's proprietary of Sony, which means it's illegal to do otherwise.
As for the Linux bit, it was discontinued with the small form factor versions, and there was an announcement about them discontinuing it. If you don't like it, don't buy it.....it's that simple.
