For 90% of sites. I completely reccomend Mozilla Firefox.
And as a staple, I also recommend "NoScript"; an add-on for firefox. It blocks all Java-script unless authorized by you, at which point it will remember you authorized it next time you visit.
This means that any potential spyware, or viruses embedded into a site, will not be activated. And most of the time you don't need to even enable java to view the meat and potatoes of the site
