"Bench racing" to me is almost the same thing that we use to do, although we couldn't get banned and the parking lots were full of different makes and models. The fastest guy there had a tubbed Chevy Luv with a double pumper 410 w/ an occasional spray hidden under the bed cover, some kind of 3 speed and 4.10's in the rear. The only slip he carried around was a 10.89 @ 128mph... Nobody ever raced him. I had a mini tubbed 1976 Mustang II notchback and ran a 351c duel 4bbl, C4 transmission and weight reduction... I never put it on a dyno, never ran it on a track. It was the awesome....

I will never forget the night that I lost to a notchback early 90s fox body. Kid pulled up at the local spot. Car didn't sound that radical. But you could see the 4+ inch inlet tube right under the front bumper and he was driving, like an idiot, on slicks on public roads. He pulled up and parked near me. I was riding my GSXR1000 that night and he asked me if I wanted to run. I was like sure we can go.
It was a hell of an experience watching a car pull away from me on the 1000.
2 weekends after that a bunch of us met to go to the track. Dude drove the fox body up to Rockingham, NC, from Columbia, SC. Then proceeded to run some 8.80s @ 17x mph and drove the car back.
Was seriously impressed.
