They're not getting rid of Pontiac in that sense.
Right now, the vast majority of all Buick, Pontiac and GMC dealers are all under one roof. And they've been set up to compliment each other's lineups: Buick has...what, 3-4 cars and one crossover? And GMC has a few trucks. Together with Pontiac...these three acted as one single brand with three names. The management structure reflected that as well.
Now, Pontiac will be turned into a niche brand selling only 1-3 cars. They'll all be high-feature, high-excitement cars; like the G8 and Solstice. (In fact, those are two of the 3 expected to survive the shrink).
They can do this
because Pontiac dealers share space with Buick/GMC dealers. And if you notice -- they list those two as "core" brands. So Pontiac the nameplate may not get advertised or even exist as it's own brand, but those cars will, and they'll be housed with the Buicks and GMCs.
