I dont know now cause looking in the link upflying provided that would "seam" more correct.
I used seam sealer on my 68 GTO for the firewall and such but it was spot welded. In your case you dont have the rigidity of the a spot weld so seam sealer will be an issue.
Sounds like you may have a repair on your hands.
