I really don't think it's coincidence. Although there is no real proof, I think the effect the moon has on the earth helps nature do it's thing...which we call natural disasters. It just happens too often with supermoons to not see that.

What I believe happens is that the moon causes tides. Which in turn causes more pressure on the ocean floor. With the moon getting this close, it's only adding that much more pressure and helping along earthquakes/volcanoes.
