Afghanistan
Modern advances in technology, coupled with the extreme long ranges involved in combat across the mountainous regions of Afghanistan post-9/11 led to exponential increases in long distance sniper kills. In March 2002, Hathcock's 1967 shot was bested by Canadian Master Corporal Aaron Perry who successfully engaged an insurgent at 2,310- meters with a McMillan Tac-50 12.7mm rifle. Perry's new benchmark was itself bested inside the same month by Corporal Robert Furlong, from the 3rd Battalion of Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI). Using another McMillan Tac-50 Furlong engaged an insurgent at 2,430 meters.
