If you live in the suburbs you're even more out of luck. There are so many places in the suburbs that don't have bus stops for miles apart and if a bus does stop, it'll be once every hour or more sometimes. It's not so bad to commute in the city, but subways are much dirtier here than what I've seen in western Europe for the most part.

I agree with you that the subways here are much dirtier as the Paris subways were very clean compared to NYC, and the trains came to the station on average every three minutes.
You are correct with regards to being out in the suburbs and not having as many train or bus stops. Even with the great public transportation there were too many cars on the road as we all seem to like our independence, and they have horrible rush hours. Makes LA's seem tame by comparison.
Cold fusion is the answer, but it would suck with a head on as you would have to close a portion of the freeway for about 100 years.
