Home defense weapon (HDW) system is always a question that brings great debate. Several areas will be discussed with regards to:
- Knock down power (Calibers)
- Pentration capability
- CQB- Close quarters
- Intruder scare factor (Shotgun chambering)
These are all relevant concerns and things that should be considered, but many miss some key points:
- Who will be using this firearm (Skill Level)
- What type of structure/dwelling
- Single occupant or entire family
- Are there children within reach of HDW
The reason I bring these up, every situation presents different opinions of what might suit the enviroment as a "Better fit" when it comes to the HDW.
If the skill set and experience of the user is minimal to no experience, then I would recommend a simplistic firearm, one that presents minimal steps to use yet doesn't present much of an intimidation factor. You have to take into condieration that many people are scared of firearms mainly due to lack of exposure. Since approx: 80% of shooting firearms is purely mental and the other 20 skill set, that has to be taken into consideration. This would weigh in on the DA (Double Action) revolver side of HDW. Revolvers are very simplistic, anyone with minimal knowledge can grasp the overall concept that the DA revolver brings to the table. Simply load the prescribed amount of rounds, point and squeeze...
With the type of dwelling and family size, one has to think about the round they are going to use, whether it's a .380, .38, .357 on up to a .45 ACP... Penetration in an occupied residence can present several issues... If you have an intruder in your residence and you have no alternative but to result to deadly force, each time you squeeze the trigger and the round exits the muzzle, it has to go somewhere... In the process of going somewhere, how far it goes becomes the question.
Those not familiar with "Frangible Ammunition" really need to consider it's use with regards to home defense. Frangible rounds are designed, upon impact with a hard surface, to break apart reducing over penetration and ricochets.
Children present in the home? If you have kids, you have to consider safekeeping of your HDW, this will also play a role in weapon selection. Is it safer to store a revolver/pistol vs. shotgun next to your bed for easy access at night??? You have to make that call and it's something to consider with HDW selection...
Lastly, and this was touched on a little, the user plays the biggest role in HDW selection... The user has to be comfortable with whatever weapon system is choosen and more importantly, must become profficient in its use and application... This can not come from reading this or any forum... Most ranges will rent firearms... Go to the range with a selection in mind and try them out... Find the one that best fits "YOU" and keep you and your family safe...
Remember, We don't purchase HDW systems for "If" but rather "when" an intruder will attempt to harm you or your family...
Be prepared and be safe...
