As said already about the price of Diesel, it always seems to happen that once Diesel approaches $4+ per gal. auto manufacturers start propping their upcoming Diesel car that will give great mileage, etc. etc.
Volkswagen's new (re-vamped to meet 50-state emissions) TDI was the same thing a couple years back when Diesel hit $5gal. Once it gets that high, any savings over gasoline go right out the window. The problem is, the EPA saw demand for small-engine Diesels in the U.S. rising and knew what to do to keep cost-effectiveness away from consumers. *cough* Ultra-low sulphur *cough*
