That stigma has begun to wear off. The more recent problems have been the EPA has made diesel more expensive in the US than anywhere else in the world. (The engine option that is, though the big jump in the fuel price with ULSD hasn't helped either.)

I wish diesels were more available. Today, they have gotten to the point that they are making more power (not just more torque, but actually more horsepower) than similarly sized gas engines. VW's 2.0 diesel is slightly faster 0-60 and quarter mile than the 2.5L 5-cyl gas engine in the same cars. If only the EPA would allow them to be economical.
