I also bought my car new. I waited a little over 2K miles to ever punch it hard. I have 167,000 miles now (7 yrs later), the only engine problem that ever happened was one bad coil pack. (4.6L ohc V8 ford). I don't know for sure if waiting helped or not. The engine felt EXTREMELY tight when it was new. That was one reason I waited.
