Overshadowing all that is the "nanny state knows what's best for you" solution to everything. Sadly, most people buy into this to one degree or another. Even here, most people would say "the government HAD to bail out GM, it was for the greater good."

No one is allowed to "fail" in the nanny state. Just ratchet that down to the individual level and it plays out in how children are raised. Every law, every regulation, every PC program foisted upon the American people is billed as "for the children" or "the greater good".
