I think you will find that a much more significant contributor to perceived "ride quality" is how the individual manufacturers tune their suspensions. Sporty cars have fairly stiff springs and shocks. From a "ride quality" standpoint, that tends to dominate the actual suspension configuration (and as production solid axle suspension setups go, the current Mustang's is about as good as they get...).
If anyone's ever driven a 350Z vs. a Mustang GT, the 350Z's ride is "brutal" in comparison. Has nothing to do with IRS vs. solid... it's just the way Nissan has tuned the car. As a SERIOUS sports car. Of course, heavier cars tend to ride better, too....
I applaud Ford for offering the more performance handling oriented buyers an option with the "Track Pack" on the 2010 car.
It will be very interesting to see how GM decides to tune the various Camaro models relative to competitors like the Challenger and the Mustang.
