Older cars emit a lot more than CO2 and water, and its this other stuff that has made the air in cities like LA that wonderful yellow-brown colour. New cars emit little more than the regular by-products of combustion. However, has anyone looked at the lifecycle environmental cost of building a new car? Cars aren't grown in a field or hauled out of a mine. For a car that has been built 20 years ago a lot of its impact has already been felt. But to build a new car to replace an old one? You're gonna have to save a lot of gas to make up for the emissions caused by manufacturing.
