Or maybe I just don't understand, and should consult a geologist who has worked with oil companies who wants to feed people lines to justify the rise in price of gasoline - PLUS crap down our throats and tell us that it's a good thing because it will inspire us to develop alternate energies.

It's because we generally do not get windy days, or even days where a strong breeze is common. If the air doesn't move, then whatever you put in it will stay right above you until the wind picks up.
