One of my dad's jobs was to install catalytic converters into F-bodies. The first few times he did it, it wasn't so bad. But after installing hundreds of catalytic converters into hundreds of Camaros and Firebirds every day, his arms became so sore that he could barely move them.
By the end of my dad's 30-year tenure at GM, he was making around $27/hour. I'm not sure where you got the $30-$50/hour figure from, usually the only people who make wages like that either have a ton of seniority or are skilled trades. The average assembly line worker with 10-15 years under his or her belt doesn't make anything close.
