I have used my side mirrors for as long as I can remember. I even use them when turning while backing.

And you really don't need a drivers side mirror if you're driving the speed limit and you don't have a stiff neck, unless you are backing. So my driver side mirror is set to see straight back and not for lane changing.

If you are driving over 100 mph, and others around you are also, then set the driver mirror accordingly. But looking over your shoulder is really easy.
