They are hardly well regulated, more like a bunch of nut jobs; hence them getting arrested. Unless you think shooting cops is the sort of well regulated people you want around. Find me 5 well regulated militias, that are well balanced and operating with local officials for the defense of their counties and states; then we'll talk. More often then not, they are just hyped up nutters with a beef against authority. Or worse, they have an inflated sense of self righteousness. Either way, the FBI and ATF do a good job of keep these kooks under control.
My point was more that the 2nd amendment has been interpreted by supreme court, and it needed to be. If one was a strict constitutionalist, as the quote suggested, then private citizens would only be able to own firearms if they belonged to a well regulated militia. Luckily, there have been more level heads that have interpreted the amendment to allow us to own guns privately, and with regulation. I certainly don't want to be part of a militia, and am glad that the courts have ruled that I can own fire arms privately. I'm also fine that there are some rules that govern the purchase and ownership of them. Granted, the restrictions wax and wane over time, but that is how we set up our government.
